About Us

Here at The Devon School of English we have created a relaxed and friendly environment where learning English is a real pleasure and where everyone is treated as a special guest. We started the school in 1971 and now our sons, all academics and linguists, are the directors of the school. They work hard to maintain the very highest standards in student education, activity programmes, accommodation and welfare.

As an independent, family-run school, we can react quickly to the latest developments in teaching and preserve that “personal touch” for which we are well-known. Understanding and satisfying an individual student’s needs and objectives lie at the heart of our approach to the learning experience, encouraging students to take responsibility for their own progress.

The Devon School of English and Queen’s College share the same ideas about education. A school should be a place where everyone counts; should have a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with a real sense of purpose and, above all, should have a passion for learning. This vision of how a school should be underpins The Devon School’s exciting residential study centre at Queen’s College. Set in a quiet, exclusive and leafy neighbourhood, it is the ideal location for a residential summer school. Not only is the school in the heart of some of the most beautiful countryside in the West Country but also only minutes away from the lively and attractive town centre of Taunton, the county town of Somerset. What’s more, it is only two hours away from London.

All the teachers and staff look forward to seeing you,

Brian & Joan Hawthorne,
Founders of the Devon School of English

"Teaching is excellent and students learn very successfully. Teachers plan and prepare lessons extremely effectively to match the needs of their students. Their subject knowledge and understanding are excellent."
