What will I learn?

You will learn how English is used in the modern world with teachers who know how to make practice in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation meaningful, memorable and enjoyable. You will improve your use of English, practising speaking, listening, reading and writing.

At the beginning of each week, your teacher will preview what you will study in the week and ask you if there are any areas you would like to study. The teacher will add all of the suggestions to a lesson menu in your classroom. The suggestions could be about a grammar point, a vocabulary area, or practice for a particular situation (e.g. visiting a doctor, giving a presentation in English, etc).

At the end of each week, you will usually have a short test to review the use of words and phrases you have studied. This will be a simple, informal test to help you assess your own progress and how much you have remembered.

How long can I study?

The minimum length of stay is 2 weeks. Teenagers usually study 15 hours each week. In very busy weeks your lessons may be in the morning (from 09:00 to 12:30) or afternoon (13:30 to 17:00). We will alternate week by week between morning and afternoon lessons.

When do the courses for teenagers start?

Courses start on any Monday throughout the summer from June 10th to August 24th in 2018.

What can I do after school?

The teenage activity programme changes each week. You can go on trips to local places of interest such as Kents Cavern and Paignton Zoo or the cities of Exeter and Plymouth and the wild countryside of Dartmoor. Popular activities include wildlife boat trips, fishing, surfing, climbing, bowling and raft building. To see an sample activity programme for 2018, please CLICK HERE.

Recreational activities are closely supervised by our Activity Leaders. Students must take part in the full activity programme and are not permitted to go off on their own during activities. On two evenings a week, juniors go out on a school activity (for example to a cinema, disco or barbecue).

On other evenings, younger students usually stay with their host family in the evening unless they have written permission from their parents or guardian stating what time they must come home.

Where will I stay?

You will stay in a house with a host family as close as possible to the school - a maximum of 20 minutes’ walk. Staying with an English family gives you lots of chances to use your English and learn more about English life. Teenagers share a room with a student from another country. You can also ask to share with a friend. There is a supplement per week for students who request a single room. Executive rooms are available on request.

Safeguarding, Supervision & Security

Safeguarding, supervision and security are certainly the major concerns of parents sending their children to England, maybe for the first time, and we, at The Devon School, give these matters absolutely top priority.

We make sure that parents can feel confident about sending their child to study with us. All of our activities are closely supervised by our managers, teachers and activity leaders.

All staff will have undergone Safeguarding training and will all have been checked using the DBS (Police checks) service for Enhanced Disclosure as they are working with under 18s. We follow a Safe Recruitment Policy meaning that, together with the above, 2 references are obtained for each member of staff and all "holes" in CVs are scrutinised during the interview process. The staff have a rigorous Code of Conduct which they must follow.

Students must take part in our full activity programme and are not permitted to go off on their own. Attendance in lessons is checked every lesson. Attendance on activities is checked very activity. In the evenings students stay with their homestay hosts or, if they have parental permission, can go out with their friends until their curfew time (13-15 years = 22.00, 16-17 years = 22.30).

At the weekends, on Saturday they have a full-day trip and on Sunday they stay with or are supervised by their homestay hosts who check what their plans on for the day, where they will go and how long they will be away (again this is only if parental consent is given for this)

Staff are always on hand to deal with any individual problems or requests. Our Anti-Bullying Code (ABC) means that everyone can be sure that they will enjoy their time at The Devon School free from bullying.

On the first day of school, students are given a personal identity card with an emergency telephone number which can be contacted 24 hours a day - +447920 108602. Students also receive a brightly-coloured wristband to wear which also shows this emergency telephone number.
